Rakshita is an initiative by the DM East Office to promote driving of public vehicles by the women. These days Delhi is witnessing events which is are creating a sense of insecurity among females which is not good for a healthy society. A nation cannot modernize itself if 50% of the populace feels insecure and constantly remain in fear. A fearless, self-reliant and confident woman creates a safe society. In order to achieve it, it is felt that unless women does not themselves come out and drive public vehicles, women commuter cannot get safety feeling.

Rakshita initiative was launched to address all the issues related to women driver by tying up different components of driving and converging services provided by different Govt Agencies, NGOs, willing persons in following field:-

v Driving Training,

v Driving License Issuance,

v Loans For Vehicle Purchase,

v Training for self defence

v Behavioural Training,

v Crèche For Small Children

The initiative started with the aim of enabling interested group of females chosen through Gender Resource Centres(GRCs) of the District and Civil Defence Volunteers to drive cabs. It was launched on 16th December, 2014. The driving training was tied up with Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR). The then Transport Commissioner Sh Gyanesh Bharti, IAS, also addressed the gatherings and encouraged the participants to take up the public vehicle driving to make Delhi Safe.

Divisional Commissioner Sh Ashwani Kumar, IAS addressed the gathering through video conferencing and encouraged them to take it up to support their families by earning livelihood and become a role model for other females to follow.

After the launch of laws and framework related to e-rickshaws, women participants were encouraged to opt for e-rickshaw considering the benefits. The e-rickshaw license is granted to the fresh license holders after a 10 days training which is not possible in case of commercial vehicle driving as for that one year driving experience is essential. The training for e-rickshaw has been volunteered by a NGO called Community Based Mobilization for Development.

As on date, behavioral training has already been provided to 79 women participants. Learning license for commercial cab driving as well as e-rickshaw has been provided to 36 women participants in collaboration with Transport Department. One month car driving training is already being imparted to the first batch of 10 participants by the IDTR and the NGO CBMD will start training for e-rickshaw to 15 women participants soon.
